After completion of registration and necessary announcement for coordination purposes, the history
of exterior lights, then a detailed discussion of each exterior light application will begin; including position, anticollision,
formation, landing/taxiing, recognition, in-flight refueling, NVG compatibility, etc., including the FAR and Mil-Spec requirements.
Discussions will be held of both clear and colored glassware; including the characteristics such as stresses, tolerances,
optical characteristics and limitations. An in-depth discussion of the best exterior light sources and design techniques for
both visible and NVG exterior light applications will be given.

*Fundamentals Of Light and the Nature of Color |
The fundamentals of light will be explained, starting with the fact that light is made up of a very
narrow band of the electro- magnetic energy spectrum. It ranges from approximately 380 nanometers to 760 nanometer. This technical
presentation and discussion of light fundamentals and its utilization as applied to aircraft lighting applications will be
explained. Also a discussion of the mechanics of how to compute light, specify it, evaluate it, etc., with specific emphasis
on the utilization of the CIE color chart as it is applied to crew station lighting will be explained.

*Incandescent Lamps and Their Characteristics |
The nature of incandescent lamps, although taken for granted by most engineers, is an extremely complex
subject. This session will furnish specific technical data on the most widely used lamps of crew station lighting. Also to
be covered will be the requirements for design and testing of lamp application.

*LED (Light Emitting Diodes) |
A complete discussion of theory of Light Emitting Diodes (LED) and their applications in the aerospace
crew station, along with complete design information that will be needed by the engineer.

*Electroluminesscent Lamps and Applications Including NVG and Lighting Controllers |
One of the most misunderstood light sources of today is the electroluminescence (EL) lamp, yet it
offers one of the best light sources for crew station illumination. This session will cover a technical presentation and workshop
of the theory of EL lamps, their various characteristics, specific techniques of design and displays utilizing them, many
design techniques utilized in aerospace crew station applications and their use in night vision goggle (NVG) as now accepted. Controllers will also be covered;-

Lighting controllers and their role in an integrated aircraft lighting system,- Intelligent lighting controllers and the advantages they offer, - Integrating different lighting technologies using lighting controllers

*Night Vision Goggles (NVG) |
This session will also cover the theory, mathematical and technical applications of NVG in GEN-III
and later applications in both Rotary Wing and Fixed Wing applications. The technical requirements and specifics will be discussed
for both crew station and exterior lighting.

*NVG Filters |
A complete discussion of the technology of specifying and designing application utilizing NVG filters,
for incandescent, LED and electroluminescent light sources, as well as CRTs and flat panel displays.

FRIDAY 8:30 AM - Noon

*Requirements Of Crew Station Lighting Display Illumination |
The fundamentals and techniques required to design crew station lighting. This will cover both incandescent
and EL lighting techniques. The "do’s" and "don’ts" of both visible and NVG crew stations are dealt with in detail.

RegistrationAttendance is by advance registration and will be limited in size for maximum effectiveness. Registration will
be accepted on a first-come basis. Each registration is for one person.
The registration fee covers instruction, the necessary textbook(s) and other Short Course materials,
morning coffee, and a framed certificate. The registration fee is due two weeks prior to start of the Short Course, and does
not include cost of hotel rooms, meals, taxes or gratuities.
Registration becomes firm two weeks before the scheduled date of the Short Course, after which no refunds
will be made. Aerospace Lighting Institute reserves the right to cancel the Short Course should insufficient registrants be
received, in which case all money will be refunded. Substitution during the Short Course will not be permitted.
